Appreciation post: I was cleaning out my old shop and found a receipt for shellac from 1997.

It was from a place called 'Finley's Supply' in Akron, and a gallon was only $22... I pay almost four times that now. Where do you guys get your shellac without breaking the bank?

Finley's Supply, that's a name I haven't heard in years. I always bought the premixed stuff from the big box stores for speed. Then a buddy showed me how to mix my own from flakes, and the cost difference was a real eye-opener. A pound of dewaxed flakes from an online woodworking supplier lasts me forever now. The quality is better, and I can mix just what I need for a small touch-up job.

Exactly, the quality from flakes is just unbeatable.

Wait, is mixing from flakes really that much cheaper when you factor in the denatured alcohol? I buy the premixed stuff because I go through it fast and the convenience is worth the extra cost. I don't have time to mix batches and wait for flakes to dissolve for every small project.
