Pro tip: My smartwatch died halfway through a 10-mile hike in Sedona last month.
I mean, I was totally lost without the trail map app. Now I always pack a backup paper map, but is there a better gadget for this?

Figure out what kind of battery life you really need. My old GPS watch crapped out after six hours, which is fine for a normal day but useless for a long hike. I switched to a handheld GPS unit that runs for 18 hours on two AAs. It's bulkier, but it won't die when you're miles from the trailhead.

Two AAs" sounds like my kind of backup plan.

Yeah, that's the real trade-off, isn't it? Do you find the bulk of the handheld unit annoying to carry, or is the peace of mind totally worth it?
