Remembering how my dad used to fix a squeaky floor with a single nail, but my attempt to silence one in my 1950s bungalow turned into a three-week project of pulling up boards and shimming joists.

What started as a simple squeak under the bedroom rug ended with me discovering a section of subfloor that had separated from the joist by nearly an inch, a problem that took three weekends and a borrowed rotary tool to properly shim and secure without damaging the original hardwood.

Should've just nailed it down like your dad.

Tried that once and the whole thing split. Found it works better to use a pilot hole first, right? Drilled a smaller guide hole before putting the nail in, and it went straight without cracking the wood. Takes an extra minute but saves the headache of fixing a split piece. Why force it when a little prep does the job.
