Just learned how much of the Grand Canyon is actually missing

Honestly, I was reading a book about rock layers last week and it said over a billion years of rock record is just gone from the Grand Canyon. They call it the Great Unconformity. It's like a huge chunk of time got erased, and you can see the gap between two rock layers clear as day. I always thought the whole stack was there, but nope. Found it in a geology textbook from my local library. Has anyone else seen a really clear unconformity in person?

Huh, I see what you're getting at but I guess I just look at it different. To me, if the rock record that's supposed to be there is gone, then for all practical purposes that time is missing right now. Like we can't study it from the canyon.

Look at the actual study. It's not saying a billion years of history vanished. They found a gap in the rock record, like a huge chunk of time with no layers. Means erosion wiped that part away, not that the time itself didn't happen.
