Serious question, my kid asked me why some rocks are sparkly and others aren't

Tbh, I just gave a basic 'minerals' answer, but then she asked if that meant all the dull rocks in our yard were boring. It made me realize I don't know how to explain the cool stuff in plain rocks. How do you guys talk about common rocks to get someone interested?

Dull rocks in our yard were boring" is a wild thing for a kid to say. Every single one of those is a tiny piece of a mountain that got smashed and traveled who knows how far. That's way more interesting than just being shiny.

You ever think about how long that rock has been around? I used to only care about the pretty ones too, but you're right. That plain gray stone could be older than anything else you'll ever touch. It's got a whole story of being broken and moved by ice or water. Kinda makes you want to go look at your yard differently.
