Talking to my kid's teacher about the local river stones

I was at my son's school for a field trip thing last month, and his teacher pointed out how the smooth stones in the creek bed were all different colors. She said it's because they came from different rock layers upstream that eroded over thousands of years. I mean, I'd just seen them as gray rocks before, but now I actually look for the red and green bits. Has anyone else had a moment like that where you started noticing the geology right under your feet?

Actually I kinda disagree about the "right under your feet" thing. I get the appeal of noticing details but I think sometimes people overthink simple stuff like rocks. A gray stone is just a gray stone, you know? Not everything needs a whole backstory.

Totally get that. I started seeing the different layers in sidewalk cracks after a geology podcast.

Oh great, now I'm going to be the weirdo staring at the driveway gravel. Thanks for that.
