My studio partner keeps cracking his marble bases and I think I know why
He's been pulling them off the punty way too fast, before they've had enough time to cool down evenly. I watched him do it three times yesterday, and each base split right along the seam where he attached it. He said, 'I just want to move on to the next piece,' but that impatience costs him a good base every time. Has anyone found a good trick for judging when a marble is ready to come off the punty without cracking?

Maybe he's just using the wrong type of marble, have you considered that? The cooling rate might not be the real problem at all. Could be a flaw in the material itself or even how he's scoring it before the break. Rushing the process is one thing, but blaming it entirely on impatience seems too simple.

Actually a solid point about the marble type. Some materials just can't handle rapid cooling without stress. The scoring method could be the real weak link here.
