Okay so I think I just paid $40 to a ghost car wash

I was driving home from work yesterday and saw a new car wash place on Main Street, the sign said 'Grand Opening, $10 Special'. I pulled in, paid at the machine, and drove through the tunnel. Everything seemed normal, soap, water, the works. But when I got out to check, my car was still totally dirty, like it never even got wet. I went back to the machine and my receipt just said 'Transaction Complete' for $40, not $10. Has anyone else run into a place that just... doesn't work but still takes your money?

Had the same thing happen at a gas station wash last year. I called my credit card company right away and filed a dispute for services not provided. They reversed the charge after I sent them a photo of the receipt. Might be worth trying that route if the place won't give you a refund.

Yeah, the "services not provided" route @jade226 mentioned is solid. I did the same when a car wash left my car dirty. I called my bank, told them exactly what happened, and they put the charge on hold while they looked into it. Sending a quick picture of the messed up result helped my case a ton.

My wife had a similar thing happen at a self-serve spray wash last fall. She put in five dollars and the soap came out fine but the rinse never kicked on. She stood there for five minutes hitting buttons and nothing changed. Finally she just drove away with half a car washed and suds still drying on the hood. She called the number on the machine and got a recording that said "mailbox full." That was the end of that.
