Okay so the street sign on my corner has said 'Maple Ave' my entire life, but yesterday it suddenly says 'Maple Drive'. No construction, no new pole, just a different sign.

Honestly that's totally normal and happens all the time. The city probably just had the wrong name in their system for years and finally fixed a clerical error. You never noticed the old sign was wrong because you got used to it. They swap out signs based on official records, not what feels right to the neighbors. It's still the same street, just with the correct label now.

Ruby, you're absolutely right about people getting used to the wrong name. I had a similar thing happen a few years back when our neighborhood's "Oak Lane" suddenly became "Oak Street" after a records audit, and my family still calls it Oak Lane out of habit. The city clerk told me those name errors can sit in the system for decades before someone catches them during a routine check.
