A client said my color choices were 'too safe' and it clicked

I showed a branding draft to a client in Portland last month, and they pointed out all my palettes looked like muted blues and grays. They asked, 'Where's the energy?' I went back and made a rule to add one bright, unexpected color to every mood board now, like a neon green or a hot pink. It's made my initial concepts way more interesting. Anyone else get stuck in a color rut and find a simple fix?

What about trying a color you actively dislike? I was stuck in warm earth tones for ages until I forced myself to use a cool violet, and it broke the whole cycle. That little shock to the system can really reset your eye.

@hugo_grant that thing about using a color you dislike is actually genius. It's like your brain fights it at first but then starts finding weird ways to make it work and that's where the good stuff happens. @mia_thompson13 said try a color that scares you and honestly putting those two ideas together might be the best way to shake up a rut.

Try adding a color that scares you a little.
