Update: That digging crew on Maple Ave is playing with fire

In my experience, I've seen some bad calls, but this takes the cake. They're running a bulldozer on wet ground without checking for underground utilities first. Your mileage may vary, but that's a sure way to hit a water main or worse. I spotted them yesterday pushing piles too close to the sidewalk, and it's already cracking. Take this with a grain of salt, but I think the operator needs to slow down and think about safety. We all know rushing jobs like this can cause big problems for everyone around. Let's not let this slide in our own towns.

Used to think speed was king on sites like that, but seeing cracked concrete from rushed jobs changed my mind fast.

Read about a crew last month that rushed a dig without calling for utility marks first. They hit a gas line two blocks over and the whole street had to be evacuated for hours. It wasn't even a big project, just some lazy corner cutting. Stuff like that sticks with you, makes you wonder how often it happens. Now every time I see equipment moving fast on a wet site, I get nervous.

Stopped a guy on my crew once from digging near a marked line because the ground looked wrong, soft and wet like it was hiding something. Made him call for a second locate ticket, and turns out the water main map was off by three feet. That extra ten minute call saved us from a real bad day. Now I treat every mark like a suggestion and trust my eyes on the ground more.
