Can we talk about the agency that went quiet for 11 days and billed me for it anyway?
Three months into a retainer with a small shop in Portland, my main contact just vanished. I emailed twice, called once, and got nothing back for 11 days, then a invoice showed up with 40 hours on it for that same stretch. I sent a polite note asking what the hours covered, and they said "strategy work" with no notes or files to show for it. I asked for a call before paying and they pushed back hard, so I just paid the last month and walked. Has anyone else had an agency bill through a silence like that, and did you fight it or let it go?
This kind of thing happens in a lot of places, not just agencies. You see it with contractors, mechanics, even doctors sometimes. Someone goes dark, then hands you a bill and acts like you are the problem for asking questions. The silence is the tell. If they had real work to show, they would have sent it the first time you asked instead of hiding behind "strategy work." Paying and walking was the right call, because chasing a small shop over a month of retainer usually costs more in time and stress than you would ever get back.
