A contractor at my kitchen reno in Nob Hill told me to stop caulking before painting and I'm still upset about it
I was patching drywall around the cabinets on my 1948 place near Central and the guy helping me watched me run a bead of caulk along every seam first. He said 'that's backwards, paint first then caulk' and showed me why: paint won't stick right over caulk and the seam cracks within a year. I re-did a whole wall to test it and he was right, the caulk line stayed clean and the paint grabbed way better. Small thing but it changed my whole order of operations on trim and patches. Did anyone else learn this the hard way or was I just the last one to hear it?
Been there. I caulked every seam on my stair trim before painting and it looked great for maybe six months, then every line cracked and peeled. The paint just sat on top of the caulk like a skin instead of biting into the wood. My painter buddy laughed at me and told me the same thing, paint the trim, let it dry, then caulk the seams last. Changed how I do every single patch now and my lines stay tight way longer. You are not the last one to hear it, half the guys at the hardware store still argue about it.
