My neighbor swore I didn't need to prime my drywall before painting in our adobe house

He said it was a waste of money and time, so I skipped it on my living room. Three months later the paint started peeling off the joint compound in 2 spots near the window. Has anyone else had primer fail them or was this just bad luck?

OMG the exact same thing happened to me lmao. My neighbor gave me the same advice and I listened like an idiot, and now I have this stupid peeling patch right by my kitchen window too. I think it's worse with adobe houses honestly, something about the moisture or the way the walls breathe just makes primer way more important. I ended up having to scrape all that paint off and start over, and lemme tell you I was so mad at myself for not just spending the extra 20 bucks on primer lol. Now I tell everyone just ignore the old heads on this one, primer is totally worth it.

@brookethomas you are so right about the adobe thing, my buddy who works at a paint store told me the same thing about how those walls just soak up moisture different. Funny story though, I once tried to save money by using that cheap dollar store primer and it actually worked out okay for like a year before it all started cracking. But yeah, definitely not worth skipping the primer, learned that the hard way too.
