Peeling paint after 3 weeks, did I skip a step or is the primer at fault?
Painted my garage door frame in the North Valley last month and it's already peeling in big flakes. I used a bonding primer from Kelly-Moore, then two coats of latex, but it sat through that heavy rain on the 12th. Some say I needed to sand the old oil-based paint first, others swear the primer is garbage. Have any of you had this happen with older stucco houses around here, and what did you do to fix it?

Did you sand or scuff the old oil paint before priming? Bonding primer sticks to chalky or glossy stuff but oil paint needs a rough surface or it just flakes right off. Scrape what's loose, hit it with 80 grit, and spot prime before you repaint.

honestly I've painted over oil paint without sanding and it held up fine for years. maybe I got lucky? my last place had oil trim everywhere and I just wiped it down with deglosser and slapped primer on, no flaking at all. people act like oil paint is this crazy thing that needs a whole science project but in my experience as long as it's clean and not peeling you're good. sure if it's shiny as glass maybe rough it up a bit but 80 grit everywhere seems like overkill. have you actually seen it flake off yourself or is this just what you read somewhere?
