Dub vs sub debate finally clicked for me after watching Cowboy Bebop both ways

I always swore by subs for authenticity but after rewatching Spike's final scene with the English cast I realized the voice direction actually fits the noir tone better, anyone else find specific shows where one version just works harder than the other?

Feeling you on this so much. I had the same moment with Bebop, it just clicks differently when the voices match the mood. It’s like the English cast figured out something the original didn’t even try to do, and now I can’t watch it any other way. Really glad you brought this up because I thought I was the only one who felt guilty liking a dub more than the original.

Oh man, you nailed it with Bebop. That's the perfect example because the English cast basically lives and breathes that noir feel. I'd say try Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex next. The English dub there is crazy good because the voice director told everyone to treat it like a hard-boiled crime show, not a cartoon. The Japanese version is fine but it plays it straighter, while the English cast adds this weary, seen-it-all edge that makes the political stuff hit harder. Just my two cents from watching both versions a few times.
