Dubbing vs subs now that I'm older, the switch surprised me
I used to watch everything with subs back in my early 20s, swore dubs were for lazy people, and even rewatched whole shows just to catch the original voices... but around 2019 after a long work day I threw on a dubbed episode of a show I'd already seen and something just clicked. Now I mostly watch dubs unless the dub is really bad, and I honestly think it's because my brain can't keep up with reading after staring at screens all day for work. Anyone else make that flip as they got older, or am I the odd one out here?
Totally get this. Read somewhere that our reading speed actually drops as we get older (not by a ton, but enough to notice) and pairing that with tired eyes after a screen-heavy day makes subs way more work than they used to be. Back in my early 20s I could binge subbed shows for hours, now by 9pm my eyes are cooked and I'm missing half the lines. Dubs let me actually watch the animation instead of staring at the bottom third of the screen the whole time. There's also something to that thing people say about subs and dubs using different parts of your brain, reading vs just listening, and one of them wears you out faster. You're definitely not the odd one out, this seems like a pretty common flip.
