Just realized my neighbor's comment about fixing his own dryer changed my view on DIY repairs

He said 'I saved $200 but spent 6 hours and still had to call you,' which made me rethink if we should always encourage people to try fixing things first. Has anyone else had a customer's story shift their opinion on giving out repair advice?

But what about the stuff that can go really wrong? Like a neighbor tries to fix his own gas line because a video made it look easy. That's not just wasted time, that's dangerous. Where do you draw the line between a learning moment and telling someone to just call a pro for safety?

That story about the dryer is exactly why we should push DIY more. So what if he spent six hours and still called you? He learned how his machine works, saved some cash on labor, and next time he'll be faster. That "wasted" time is an investment in not being helpless. The goal isn't to get it perfect the first try, it's to stop the cycle of just calling for every little thing.
