Pro tip: Stop sanding dry filler with 80 grit right away

I spent 2 years sanding down fresh filler with 80 grit until a guy at a shop in Phoenix asked why my paper was clogging every 15 seconds. He told me to use 36 grit first and it cut my time in half. Anyone else learn basic stuff way later than they should have?

36 grit changed my life too man. I was doing a hood repair last summer and kept having to blow out my paper every 3 or 4 passes with 80 grit. Finally this old timer at the auto paint supply store told me to step down to 36 then 80 then 120 and I couldn't believe how much faster the whole job went. Now I always keep a couple sheets of 36 in my truck for the first rough pass on filler. It chews through the high spots and doesn't clog nearly as bad because the grit is so open.

Oh man, I cannot believe you were using 80 grit on fresh filler for two years! That is insane to me. I would have been so frustrated having to stop and unclog my paper every 15 seconds. I learned that same trick from a body shop guy too, but only after ruining about half a dozen sanding blocks. It really is one of those things that changes everything once you know it.
