Update: That 2007 Silverado with the quarter panel we patched instead of replaced

The owner brought it back for an oil change yesterday, and after a full Chicago winter, the repair line is completely invisible. We used a skim coat of filler over the weld and blocked it for about 45 minutes. Has anyone else had a patch job hold up that well long-term, or did we just get lucky?

Had a patch on a Tacoma bed hold up for five years in Michigan. Used a two-part epoxy primer right over the bare metal before any filler. That extra step seemed to lock out the moisture.

That Chicago salt spray is no joke, so that's a solid win. I've seen plenty of patches fail after one season because people rush the blocking. Forty-five minutes on the filler is key, letting each guide coat tell you where the low spots are. A good metal finish before the mud makes all the difference for long-term holds. Sounds like your shop just does it right.
