Saw a guy at the salvage yard swap a transmission in the parking lot

I was at the Pick-N-Pull off I-35 last Saturday picking up a alternator for a 2005 Civic. While I was checking out this old Ford Explorer I see a dude in the next row pull the entire transmission out of a wrecked F-150, drop it in the bed of his rusted Silverado, and drive off. No jack, no trans jack, just him and two buddies. They did it in under an hour. I walked over and asked how he planned to install it alone. He just laughed and said he did this every weekend for side cash. Made me realize how many guys out there are doing full swaps with basic hand tools and a prayer. Makes my job in a shop with lifts and air tools feel kinda cushy. Has anyone else run into shade tree guys pulling off stuff like this at the yard?

My buddy saw a guy doing basically the same thing at a yard down in San Antonio. The dude was swapping a Chevy 350 into a beat-up old stepside using nothing but a harbor freight engine hoist and a pack of smokes for motivation. He had the old motor out in like 45 minutes flat, no cussing or drama. My buddy said he offered to help and the guy just waved him off like it was no big deal. Makes you wonder what these guys could do with a proper shop and some real tools.

My buddy saw a guy in Houston drop a 350 into an old F150 with just a come-along and a 12-pack. Took him a whole afternoon though and he cussed the whole time, but it fired up first try.
