Rant: Heard a guy at the shop say 'just tap it with a hammer' for a stuck connector

I was at the supply counter in Phoenix last week and overheard a tech telling a new guy to lightly tap a stubborn cannon plug with a rubber mallet to seat it. That's a hard no from me, lol. I've seen that 'gentle persuasion' strip threads on a $15,000 LRU housing because someone got impatient. The manual for the Garmin G5000 system I work on specifically says 35 inch-pounds max on those D-sub connectors. Once you start hitting things, even a little, you're guessing instead of troubleshooting. Has anyone else had to fix a connector someone else 'persuaded' into place?

A rubber mallet? I mean, seriously?

Ugh, @davis.ivan, a torque wrench is cheaper than a new housing, folks.
