Why I finally stopped hating the CDT alternate routes

Last month I was dead set on following the official CDT line through Wyoming, but after 3 days of post-holing through snow up to my knees I bailed onto the Cirque of the Towers alternate. Has anyone else had a hard rule about "purity" of route just get totally shattered by one bad weather window?

Funny how that works, right. Same thing happens to me at the grocery store, @kai807. I start with a list, then I see the clearance rack and all discipline disappears. That purist rule about meal planning? Gone by aisle three, replaced by a bag of discounted pretzels I didn't need. It's like society forgot that sticking to a plan is boring but it actually works. We just let the cheap thrill of a bargain override our better judgment every single time.
