Had a chat with my neighbor that made me rethink my whole garden layout

My neighbor Dave saw me digging up a patch to put in a new raised bed and just casually said 'you know the sun hits that spot for maybe 3 hours a day, right?'. I honestly never even paid attention to sun patterns in my yard until he pointed it out. Has anyone else realized they were planting stuff in totally wrong spots after talking to someone more experienced?

And that's the thing, once someone points it out you can't unsee it right? I mean, did you actually go out and check the sun at different times of the day after he said that? It's wild how you can walk past the same spot every day and never really notice where the shadows are until you're forced to stare at it for a whole day. I'm curious how much of your other beds are in the wrong spots now that you started looking, like did it make you want to redo everything or just that one area?

Yeah, "you can't unsee it" is totally spot on. I actually read something in a gardening magazine last year where they talked about the whole "sun map" thing. The article said you gotta track light patterns every hour from like 7am to 7pm during the growing season for the most accurate picture. I gave it a try in my own yard and was shocked at how much shade my shed throws across the back corner. It made me move my whole tomato setup to the other side of the house where they get a solid 6 hours of afternoon sun.
