Rant: People keep nailing ledger boards straight into brick veneer without any flashing

I helped a neighbor tear down his deck last Sunday after only 4 years because water was rotting the rim joist from behind, and sure enough the previous owner had bolted the ledger flat against the brick with zero gap or metal flashing, which basically turned his house wall into a sponge, so has anyone else seen this kind of shortcut wreck a build?

Yeah "turned his house wall into a sponge" is one way to put it, as long as you don't mind a soggy surprise later.

Oh man, @hill.jade you've actually changed my mind with that, I used to think it was just a clever way to describe damp issues but now I get how problematic that "sponge" approach really is.
