Went to look at a friend's pergola kit and walked away shaking my head
Drove over to Jason's place near Tacoma on Saturday because he wanted my two cents on a pergola kit he found online for $700. The instructions were just 6 blurry pages and none of the pre-drilled holes matched the brackets, not even close. We spent 3 hours just shimming and re-drilling before I called it quits. How do companies sell these kits without ever test fitting the parts? Has anyone else gotten a kit that was basically scrap metal with a pretty box?

Kept hearing the same thing from a couple guys at the lumber yard, but the $700 price tag is kind of the tell here. Once you get past like $400 or so you're mostly paying for better hardware and actual engineering, and cheap kits cut corners on both. The blurry instructions are on purpose too, they know most people will just muscle through instead of sending it back. Jason should check the return window before he does anything else, because if the holes are that far off it's never going to square up right no matter how much you drill. Also worth telling him to save the box and take pics of the misaligned parts, some of those companies get real picky about refunds once you've started modifying stuff.
