Just read that a worn chain can accelerate cassette wear by up to 400%

Saw this in a technical bulletin from a major drivetrain brand. I knew it was bad, but that number really puts the cost of skipping a chain checker into perspective. How often do you guys actually see customers come in with a chain that's already trashed the rest of the drivetrain?

That line about the cost of skipping a chain checker really hits. I used to think a slightly stretched chain was just a bit noisier. Then I saw a customer's bike where the chain had worn the cassette teeth into little shark fins. The new chain just skipped over them under any load. That one repair bill changed my whole view on a twenty dollar checker.

Okay but a twenty dollar tool is still twenty bucks. I've ridden bikes for years and never had a shark fin cassette. Most people just replace the chain when shifting gets bad. That whole "destroy your drivetrain" thing feels overblown for casual riders who just do a few miles on weekends.
