Appreciation post: My sister said board games are just for kids now

I was at a family dinner in Columbus last weekend and my sister saw my copy of Dune: Imperium. She said, 'You still play those? I thought that was just for kids.' It really made me think about how people see our hobby. I tried to explain the strategy and the social part, but she just didn't get it. Has anyone else had to defend liking modern board games to family or friends?

Wait, she said that about Dune Imperium? That's a seriously heavy game with some real cutthroat politics. I'm with terry_adams81 on this, people just don't know what they're missing until they try a good one. It's like saying all movies are just cartoons for kids. Maybe next time she visits, you should set up a game and let her see how complex it really is.

Yeah it's like people see a box and just assume. My own mom still calls them "those kid games" even after I showed her how much planning goes into something like Terraforming Mars. Terry_adams81 is right, sometimes they just need to actually play one to get it.

My wife said the same thing until she tried Wingspan.
