Can we talk about how I was teaching new players wrong for years

I always explained every rule up front, but a friend in Denver just said 'let's play a round and I'll ask questions' and it clicked. Now I start with a quick goal and jump in. How do you handle teaching a complex game like Terraforming Mars to new people?

Actually, @jamie_garcia25, I never really have a single "go-to" move... it depends so much on what I'm playing. Like in chess, I might open with e4, but in a card game, I'm just trying to get a feel for my hand. Sticking to one first move every time feels like you're not even looking at the board or your cards, you know? You gotta see what you're working with first.
