I finally told my game group we need to stop buying new stuff

Last month, I looked at my shelf and counted 47 unplayed board games. I bought three more at a con in Chicago last week. It hit me that we've become collectors, not players. Three years ago, we met every Friday to actually play, but now half the night is just opening boxes and reading rules for games we'll never finish. My friend Mark said, 'But the Kickstarter exclusives!' and I just snapped. I told him the thrill is in the playing, not the plastic. We're drowning in shrink wrap while our favorite games gather dust. Has anyone else had to put their foot down about the constant buying cycle?

Mark has a point about those Kickstarter exclusives. They are limited runs and you can't get them later, so buying them now is just smart planning. The collecting is part of the hobby for a lot of us, and it's okay to enjoy that part too.

Yeah, and mitchell.daniel's take is exactly the mindset that gets you 47 unplayed games. I see this everywhere now, not just with board games. It's like we're all tricked into thinking the goal is to own the special thing, not to actually use it. My garage is full of the same kind of "smart planning" with tools and camping gear still in the box.
