Got called out for my sloppy weld prep on a 3-inch steam line last month, and honestly, it stung but they were right.

Honestly, how bad could it have been? It's just some surface prep. Seen plenty of welds hold for years with less than perfect prep work. Unless you're building a spaceship, a little rust or paint probably isn't the end of the world. Sometimes the old timers just like to nitpick.

Buddy of mine skipped grinding off some mill scale on a trailer hitch. Weld looked fine but cracked clean off on a bumpy road. That little bit of prep really does matter sometimes.
