I finally understood why the old guy at the yard in Tacoma always said 'listen to the steel'.

Remember that steel makes a different sound right before it fails... a high ping shifts to a dull thud. It's not just about listening for flaws, it's hearing the whole life of the metal, every stress and repair. That old guy was talking about patience, about learning a language most people just hear as noise. Makes you wonder what other everyday sounds we're totally missing the meaning of.

That bit about learning a language most people hear as noise hits hard. It's like we're surrounded by conversations we don't understand. Makes me want to just stop and listen more.
