Sling positions for vertical columns, I've been doing it backwards for 8 years
Got shown something on a job in Gary last Tuesday that made me feel like an idiot. I always choked the load up high on vertical tanks and columns, figured it gave more control. Old guy I was working with, Larry, stopped me and said "you're fighting the weight the whole way down." He had me rig it lower, below the balance point, and the whole lift settled way better. Less swing, easier for the crane op to set it in the shoe. I guess I never thought about how the load acts once it's off the ground. Has anyone else had a rigging habit they had to unlearn after years? What changed your approach?

Well damn, that's a solid lesson from Larry right there. I had the same thing happen with pipe bundles years ago, kept choking high because it felt like I had control, but the whole load just wanted to roll on the hook. Once I moved the choke down below the center of gravity, the crane op said it was like night and day, way steadier and easier to spot.
