Appreciation post: My book club finally finished a long novel together
Last year we tried tackling War and Peace. Gave up after 200 pages. Three months ago someone suggested The Count of Monte Cristo instead. We just finished it last Wednesday at my house. Has anyone else's group finally conquered a big book?

Man that's awesome! The Count of Monte Cristo is a beast of a book but totally worth it once you push through.
Meanwhile War and Peace is a different kind of slog - too many characters and Russian names to keep straight.
One thing I liked about Monte Cristo is how the revenge plot keeps you turning pages even when it gets slow in the middle.
Sounds like your group picked the better long book to start with.

Agree with you Kevin, Monte Cristo's revenge plot carries you through the slow bits. A buddy of mine tried tackling War and Peace on a dare and gave up around page 200 when he couldn't remember which Nikolai was which. He said the French parts also drove him crazy.
