Dropped $60 on that fancy annotated Les Misérables and the footnotes actually made me hate the book more
The editor kept inserting modern political takes that totally killed the vibe of Hugo's original drama, has anyone else had a special edition ruin a classic for them?

Wait, did the footnotes start calling Jean Valjean a problematic fave or something? lol I swear some editors think we need their modern hot takes on a book from 1862. I picked up a "critical edition" of Dracula once and the notes spent more time talking about colonialism than the actual vampires. It's like they're trying to make sure you don't enjoy the story on its own terms. Honestly, just give me the original text and let me form my own opinions.

Lol @ 'kill the vibe' - that's exactly what happened to me with a 'annotated' Moby Dick. The editor kept trying to convince me Ahab was this metaphor for toxic masculinity instead of just a crazy guy chasing a whale. It's like damn, let the story breathe without jamming your modern worldview down my throat, I just wanna read about the whale.
