Hit 50 books in a year for the first time and it broke my brain

I set a goal in January to read 52 books this year, one per week. But I manage a bookstore and work long hours, so I figured I'd maybe hit 30. Last week I passed 50 and I had to actually count them twice on Goodreads because I didn't believe it. The weird part is I wasn't even trying that hard after the first few months. I just started listening to audiobooks during my commute across Brooklyn and swapped scrolling before bed for a chapter on my Kindle. What got me is how many were short books or novellas that I used to skip. Does anyone else find their reading count shoots up when they mix in shorter stuff?

Broke my brain" is the perfect way to put it. I read this thing where a neuroscientist talked about how switching between formats like audiobooks and ebooks actually keeps your brain more engaged because it's not just one repetitive action. I started doing the same thing last year with shorter nonfiction essays mixed into my regular reading. Knocked out like 15 books I'd been avoiding because they felt too short to count. Funny how skipping the novellas was actually holding me back.

Wait, so you're telling me I could've been cheating my way through "boring" books this whole time by just switching to an audiobook? Next thing you'll say is that skipping chapters and calling it "nonlinear learning" is actually a genius move.
