Shoutout to the person who called my discussion questions boring

At my book club in Denver, a member told me my questions were just plot summaries and didn't spark debate. I now spend 30 minutes writing questions that ask 'why' the author made a choice, not just 'what' happened. What's your best trick for a good book club argument?

My old book club in Portland had a rule called the "three whys." For any major event, we had to ask why the character did it, why the author wrote it that way, and why we each felt a certain way about it. It forced us past the basic plot stuff. I still use that framework when I'm stuck.

Solid trick, @karenhenderson. Might steal that.

Man, that "three whys" rule sounds so smart but also kind of brutal. It must have been tough in the moment when you just wanted to talk about what happened in the story. Did you ever get sick of digging that deep, or did it always feel worth it in the end?
