Why does nobody talk about how a single spoiler can derail a whole book club?

Last month, someone blurted out the ending of 'Project Hail Mary' before our meeting, and half the group just stopped reading. We had to pivot to a completely different book, 'Klara and the Sun', which actually sparked a better debate about AI ethics. Has anyone else had to salvage a meeting after a major spoiler?

I just read something about how book clubs are starting to put spoiler warnings right in the meeting reminder texts now, seems like a smart move honestly. Our group has a strict no talking about the book til everyone's done rule, learned that the hard way after a disaster with 'Verity' last year.

Our group lost three members after a spoiler for 'The Silent Patient'. What's the actual rule in your club about when spoilers are okay, like after the meeting date?

Our group lost two people to a 'Gone Girl' spoiler, so I feel that pain.
