Just read that some orchids can take up to 15 years to bloom from seed. Found that in an old field guide at the Portland library.

That field guide sounds outdated. Most hybrids bloom way faster now, like in 3-5 years.

Wait, really? I had the old info in my head too. I read something years ago about orchids taking closer to 7-10 years from seedling to bloom and just accepted it as fact. Grayl65 your post got me to look into it more and now I'm seeing a bunch of sources saying the newer hybrids cut that time way down. Milesrobinson is right, the old guides just aren't keeping up with the breeding work that's been done. It honestly makes me feel a little silly for not questioning it sooner. Guess I need to toss out that old book and find something current.
