My neighbor saw me buying a bag of lentils and said 'that's a whole week of dinners for less than five bucks'

Honestly, that comment from your neighbor would make me feel so judged. It's like people have no idea how much food actually costs now, or how much a person needs to eat. A single bag of lentils is not some magic solution, it's just one ingredient. You still need to buy oil, spices, maybe some vegetables or broth to make it a real meal. It adds up so fast.

Okay but that math is a little off (unless you're eating like, three lentils a night). A bag is maybe two, three dinners if you're stretching it.

My uncle once ate lentils for a month straight and turned green according to my aunt.
