Pro tip: I found a way to get a $40 flight from Chicago to Miami by booking two separate one-way tickets on different budget airlines.

I was stuck looking at $200 round-trip fares until I checked Frontier for the outbound and Spirit for the return, which saved me over $160 and proved that mixing airlines is the real hack.

Cool trick, but is it worth the hassle of two separate bookings? You're basically doubling your chances of a delay messing up your whole trip.

Read an article that broke down the math on this. It said you need a huge price difference, like 40% off, to even consider the risk. For anything less, the stress and potential extra costs make it a bad deal. They recommended a long layover, like six hours minimum, if you ever try it.

My buddy Jake tried that split ticket trick to save $150 on a trip to Denver. His first flight got delayed three hours, so he missed the second one completely. The budget airline wouldn't give him a refund or put him on the next flight, so he had to buy a whole new last-minute ticket at the gate. I see your point, @skyler_fox72, about doubling the risk, because Jake ended up paying way more than if he'd just booked the normal way. He said the stress alone made it not worth the gamble.
