Rant: The obsession with staying in hostels to save money is actually costing people more in the long run

I booked a hostel in Barcelona for 4 nights at $35 a night, but after buying earplugs, a lock, a towel, and eating out because their kitchen was packed, I spent more than if I'd just split a budget Airbnb with a friend.

Hostels can be a trap if you don't plan it right. Found that out the hard way in Lisbon - ended up just getting a cheap hotel and splitting costs with a buddy, saved way more.

It's like convenience stores charging more for the same stuff you could buy cheaper elsewhere.
