Unpopular opinion: that $60 'buy it for life' cast iron skillet was a total waste for me

I spent $60 on a fancy pre-seasoned skillet and 3 months later it's rusted because I left it wet once. Anyone else regret splurging on kitchen gear that needs more care than a houseplant?

Tried that same route, ended up with a rusty mess in two weeks. What actually worked for me was grabbing a $15 old one from a garage sale, sanding it down, and treating it with flaxseed oil in the oven. That thing has been through scrambled eggs, cornbread, and even tomatoes without any issues. The cheap one feels more forgiving too, like it doesn't care if I forget to dry it right away. Maybe try a thrift store find and reseason it, way less pressure than the expensive ones.

Bet on the heat distribution being way more even on those old beaters since the metal was thinner and lighter back then, so you get a better sear without the hotspot issues. Vintage pans are honestly just built different than the new heavy ones.
