Watched $800 in plumbing go down a clogged drain because I didn't maintain it

Kitchen sink backed up last Wednesday. Called a plumber. He pulled out 3 years of grease and food chunks. Told me a $5 mesh strainer would've prevented it. Now I feel like an idiot. Anyone else skip the easy stuff and pay later?

Oh man, I used to be the same way. I figured as long as it was working, why bother with the extra stuff. But then my bathroom sink started draining slower and slower over a few months. Finally got a zip-it tool and pulled out a clump of hair and soap scum that looked like a wet animal. A cheap little drain cover costs nothing and would have saved me that gross discovery. Definitely changed my mind on the whole "if it ain't broke" thing.

Bought a cheap charcoal grill one time and figured I could just hose it off when it got nasty. Two years later I finally cleaned it and found a family of mice living in the ash tray. Could have saved myself the surprise with a ten minute scrub every few months.
