Appreciation post: How I stopped just skimming reviews
Honestly, I used to just look at the star rating and maybe read one or two reviews before buying something online. That changed after I bought a tent that leaked on its first use in the rain at Lake Tahoe. Now I always sort by 'most recent' and look for reviews from people who actually used the product for a while, not just unboxed it. Has anyone else found a better way to spot the real reviews from the fake ones?

Sorting by 'most recent' is such a good call. I got burned by a pair of hiking boots that fell apart because all the five-star reviews were from the first week. Now I always check for reviews that mention using the thing for a few months, it makes all the difference.

Totally agree with you about checking for reviews that mention using something for a few months, @anthony426. It's like we're all learning to spot the difference between first impressions and how stuff actually holds up. I see this everywhere now, not just with products. It's that gap between the shiny new thing and the real, worn-in truth. You really have to wait for the longer-term picture to come into focus, otherwise you're just getting the hype. It's a good habit for seeing through a lot of surface-level noise, lmao.
