My neighbor's review of a local plumber saved me from a huge mess
I used to just pick the cheapest option on a review site, but after reading his detailed post about a leak fix that held up for a full year, I called the same guy. He found a cracked pipe behind my washing machine in about 15 minutes, which my old method would have missed. Do you guys actually read the longer, story-like reviews or just skim for the star rating?

Honestly I just look at the overall star rating and maybe the most recent three reviews. My time is too short to read those long story reviews. I hired a painter last month with a 4.8 average from 200 reviews and he did a perfect job. The detailed ones often just have some personal bias or a weird specific situation that doesn't apply to me. A high average from a lot of people tells me what I need to know.

You miss the red flags, @fisher.felix.

Used to read every single review like it was my job, but you're totally right. Wasted so much time on long rants that were just about one weird thing. A solid average with a bunch of reviews smooths out all those odd complaints. Changed my mind after my last takeout order, picked the place with a 4.6 from like 500 people over the one with detailed five star stories, and it was perfect.
