Ngl that $60 lens spanner from Amazon bent on the third job

Honestly I figured a cheap spanner would be fine for basic adjustments but the tips warped trying to tighten a retaining ring on a vintage Nikkor. Anyone else had luck with the $30 Nikon factory tool on eBay or is that junk too?

Man, that’s a bummer. I did the exact same thing with a cheap spanner trying to get a stuck ring off an old Minolta. The tips just folded over like wet cardboard, and I ended up scratching the ring face pretty bad. I’ve heard people swear by the old Nikon tool, but I tried a vintage one from a swap meet and it was honestly just as soft. Now I just use a pair of good needle nose pliers with the tips wrapped in tape for light stuff, and it works way better than any of those spanners so far.

Same here, @sage_park6, the tape trick is a lifesaver. I wrecked a lens retainer ring once with a cheap spanner and now I won't touch one without wrapping the tips in electrical tape either.
