I used to think a cheap tarp was fine for a ground sheet, but my trip to the Smokies changed that.

My old $12 plastic tarp got shredded on some rough ground in about two trips, so I finally spent $45 on a proper Tyvek sheet. The difference in durability is huge, and it packs down way smaller. Has anyone else made the switch from a basic tarp to a purpose-made ground cloth?

Totally get that. Saw a video once where a guy tested a bunch of ground sheets. The cheap plastic ones always failed first, especially on sharp gravel. Tyvek just shrugged it off. It's one of those things you don't think about until you're trying to patch a hole in the rain. The weight and pack size difference alone makes it worth it. Never looked back after getting a proper sheet.
