Just got back from a wet weekend in the Smokies and my new rain jacket actually worked

I bought the Alpine Peak shell on sale for $80 and was sure it would soak through in a real storm. We got hit with steady rain for about six hours on Saturday and I stayed completely dry under my pack straps. Has anyone else had a budget piece of gear really surprise them like that?
