My old sleeping bag setup used to weigh a ton, now I barely feel it
Back in 2018 I was still hauling this old Coleman bag that weighed like 5 pounds and took up half my pack. I finally switched to a down quilt from Hammock Gear last spring and it was a game changer for my trips up around Shenandoah. The difference in pack space is crazy, I can fit a whole extra day of food now. Has anyone else made the jump from bulky bags to quilts and noticed a big change in their hikes?

I used to think the whole quilt thing was just a trend for ultralight folks who were okay being a little cold. Figured a mummy bag was the only real way to sleep warm in the backcountry. But after my second night shivering in a 4 pound synthetic bag that wouldn't compress, I finally caved and got a 20 degree down quilt. Now I tell everyone who will listen that I was wrong. The weight savings let me bring a thicker sleeping pad and actually sleep better overall. It just took getting over that mental block of not having a hood and zipper.

Yeah the "mental block" part really got me. I was the same way, totally convinced I'd freeze without a hood and zipper. But honestly I just started wearing a lightweight beanie and a buff around my neck and that fixed everything. Also switching to a quilt let me shave off almost a full pound from my pack which is insane. I pair mine with an xtherm pad now and I sleep way warmer than I ever did in my old mummy bag. Took one trip to totally convert me too.
